Tasmania experienced the hottest, driest January on record – but only 12 days into February, snow has fallen.

Snow flurries were reported down to 700 metres on Tuesday. At the Great Lake Hotel in the Central Highlands, some firefighters from Western Australia saw snow for the first time.

The Thousand Lakes Lodge, at Liawenee, is closed until Wednesday, February 20, as Parks and Wildlife staff continue working on the Great Pine Tier fire.

Onsite manager Remy Giroulet said it “didn’t feel summery anymore”, with snow falling on Tuesday.

Bureau of Meteorology Rachel McInerney said the snowline had returned to 1400 to 1500 metres, with no more predicted in the near future.

“Only the highest peaks will continue to get the odd flurry,” she said.
